The works that make up Shift, are a series of small diptychs – mirroring pages pulled from my sketchbooks. As a warm-up, I began painting in a sketchbook at the beginning of every studio session. Starting with whatever colors were left on my palette from the day before, I worked quickly and intuitively, hoping to free myself from expectation and constraint. The looseness of these small, intimate pages captures the sense of freedom and energy I am striving for in my larger paintings.
